Name your chat from the numbers, not a random generator

A random name generator picks words at random. Year in review works from the numbers in a chat instead: each person gets a role for the trait they show most, such as The Night Owl or The Novelist, and the whole year gets a name too. Under every name is the number that earned it. Any chat, one-on-one or group, works, and the names come from counts only.

Steps

  1. Export the chat. From WhatsApp, export the chat (Export chat, Without media) and keep the .zip or .txt. From Telegram, use result.json.
  2. Open https://oddbits.tech/year-in-review/ and choose the file under "Chats and Netflix".
  3. If the file covers more than one year, pick the year you want named.
  4. Go through the cards that show each person's role. Read the line under each name: that is the number that earned the role.
  5. Go to the last card for the name of the whole year.
  6. Leave "Show real names on the cards" unticked and people appear as Person 1, Person 2 and so on. Tick it only if you want the real names shown.

Do it here: Get your chat's name from its numbers. Any chat, one-on-one or group, works.

What this does not do

  • It does not make a name from a word list. The role names and the year name come from the counts.
  • It does not quote or show what anyone wrote.
  • It does not rename your chat in the app.
  • The Favourites card is separate. It lists the words and emoji you used most, read from the chat in your browser.
  • A person with fewer than 20 messages does not get a trait role: they are The Steady One, The Quiet One or, in a group, The Lurker.

Questions

Where do names like The Night Owl come from?

From the counts only, never from what anyone wrote. Each person gets one role for the trait they show most compared with everyone else in the chat: for example, the most messages late at night, or the longest messages.

Can two people get the same role?

No two people get the same trait role. Anyone left over is The Steady One, The Quiet One or The Lurker, and those can repeat.

Does it work for one-on-one chats?

Yes. Any chat works, one-on-one or group.

Is this affiliated with WhatsApp or Telegram?

No. Odd Bits is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by WhatsApp or Telegram. Both are named only to say which export this reads. No logos are used.

Check it yourself: open the Network tab in your browser's developer tools, choose the file on the page, and confirm that nothing carrying your file appears in the list. How to check that yourself
