WhatsApp chat stats from an export, no upload

Export any chat, one-on-one or group, from WhatsApp as a .txt file (or the .zip it comes in), then drop it into the Year in review page at oddbits.tech. You get message counts, your busiest day and hour, and a role for each person, all worked out from the numbers. The file is read in your browser tab, and you can check that in the Network tab.

Steps

  1. Export the chat from WhatsApp, without media (Export chat, then Without media).
  2. If the export came as a .zip, keep it as it is: you can choose the .zip itself.
  3. Open https://oddbits.tech/year-in-review/ and choose the .zip WhatsApp gave you (or the .txt) under "Chats and Netflix".
  4. If the dates look wrong, flip the day/month switch that appears.
  5. If the file covers more than one year, pick the year from the list.
  6. Go through the cards. Tick "Show real names on the cards" only if you want names shown; otherwise people appear as Person 1, Person 2 and so on.
  7. Save or share the cards you want.

Do it here: Make your cards from a WhatsApp chat. Any chat, one-on-one or group, works.

What this does not do

  • It does not show or quote your messages. The chat cards show counts, emoji and common words.
  • It does not show real names unless you tick the box.
  • The Favourites card lists the words and emoji you used most. It reads them from the chat in your browser, so those words and emoji are the only text the cards show.
  • It does not show photos, videos or voice notes. The "Without media" export leaves them out.
  • It reads files up to 250 MB.

Questions

Does it read my messages?

It counts messages, times, names and emoji. The Favourites card also reads the words and emoji you used most, in your browser. No message is quoted on a card.

Does it work for any chat?

Yes. Any chat, one-on-one or group, works. Names show as Person 1, Person 2 and so on unless you choose to show them.

Does it work with Android and iPhone exports?

Both. WhatsApp writes the lines differently on Android and iPhone, and the reader handles both. If the dates come out the wrong way round, use the day/month switch.

Is this affiliated with WhatsApp?

No. Odd Bits is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by WhatsApp. WhatsApp is named only to say which export this reads. No logos are used.

Check it yourself: open the Network tab in your browser's developer tools, drop the file on the page, and confirm that nothing carrying your file appears in the list. How to check that yourself
